Chapter Fourteen

Why did the phantom keep coming back? Theo hadn’t called him forward.

She caught Ethan before he sprinted up the steps to the porch.

“Careful,” she said.

“Okay. Okay. You’re right,” Ethan said.

With slow steps, they approached the boy.

“I’ve been looking everywhere for you. I’m sorry for how I treated you before.” Ethan put his hand on the boy’s shoulder, but the kid never moved his eyes off Theo.

“Is there anything we can get you? You need money? Food? At least tell us your name,” Ethan said.

After a stony silence, the boy spoke.

“James, sir.” His accent was distinctly southern, but not modern.

“That’s a start. I’m Ethan, and the lady is Theo. Can I take you somewhere? Where’s home?”

“North Carolina, sir.”

“Figures,” Ethan said under his breath.

The puzzle pieces were in disarray. How did they fit?

This was not a discussion for the front porch.

“How about we all go inside?” Theo suggested.

In the warmth of her small living room, she poured wine for Ethan and herself. She made hot cocoa for James, knowing he couldn’t drink it. The gesture was meant for Ethan’s benefit until he got used to the ghost in the room.

With Wishes close beside her, she sat on the floor next to James.

“Ethan, I started to explain my special gift,” she said

“Never quite finished that story.” He gave a slight nod to the boy. “But what’s that got to do with him?”

“Not all mediums sit in dark rooms or wear goofy hats or ponder crystal balls. Remember I told you my colleagues were jealous of my research?” Her mouth was bone dry, and her lips stuck to her teeth.

“You’re impressive on the computer.” Ethan’s gaze never left the boy.

“Existing information is only part of any story. History is alive and ongoing.”

Funny. Alive? Hardeehar.

She cut Wishes a hard stare.

“I had help.” Theo turned her attention back to Ethan. “I brought people from the past.”

She paused to measure his reaction. He said nothing, so she continued.

“Trouble started when some showed up that I hadn’t invited,” she said.

Like the exhausted and bedraggled boy who sat nearby with his knees drawn to his chest. His rough woven shirt had to be made of linen. There was a tear in the sleeve. His britches were a size too small, and his leather shoes were scratched.

And his wrists were red and raw as though he’d been restrained.

Not surprising, he appeared a lot older than he probably was.

“Some asked to alter history in their favor,” Theo said. “You see, Ethan, I won’t do that.”

She blew out a long, slow breath. “It was hard to keep straight those who came to assist in my work and those who came for personal gain. It ended up that I couldn’t please anyone. I renounced the gift.”

“You renounced the gift.” Ethan leaned back. “I see. So, you aren’t psychic anymore?”

Wishes stretched into a sideways backbend, then jumped into Theo’s lap.

He ain’t getting it.

She scoured her brain for a way to make him understand.

The answer’s sitting three feet away.

James. Of course.

“Ethan, I’m not a psychic.
